Europe is the continent that is making the most efforts ever in the path of decarbonization, an ambitious path and not without difficulties, both technical and economic. Let’s think about the electrification process of the machine park, which requires not massive investments, but to rethink entire industrial sectors, such as manufacturing, medical, the banking world. An important support comes from technology, in particular from cloud, IoT and Big Data, on which to leverage to detect system inefficiencies, waste and intervene to reduce CO2 emissions.

Huawei wants to position itself as one of the key providers of technology solutions and on the occasion of the HUAWEI CONNECT 2022, which was held in Paris, wanted to bring its latest solutions. We attended the event to understand what direction the multinational is moving in and what are the latest news, especially in the cloud, a sector where Huawei is investing heavily, albeit in a different way from hyperscalers such as Google Cloud. , AWS, Azure.
Huawei: all-round solutions for every sector of the industry
At the Paris event, Huawei dedicated a large area of the exhibition center where the event was held to its solutions for the various sectors. We are not talking about solutions for end users, but for business and enterprise ones. Platforms for the education sector, which included both school campus management software and various types of smart whiteboards (one of which was apparently traditional: it could be written on with a common chalk and everything was digitized and displayed on a screen); solutions for geographic networks of all sizes; storage systems capable of storing yottabytes of data (1 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 000 bytes!).

There were not only the news, but the entire catalog of solutions, also seasoned with stands where real use cases were shown. An example was a section dedicated to the Guardians of Nature program, created in collaboration with the WWF, which we talked about here.
The concept of as a Service according to Huawei: everything moves towards everything as a Service
To open the event Ken Hu, Rotating Chairman of Huawei, who took stock of the situation, explaining how technologies such as artificial intelligence and big data are in full swing, especially in industrial scenarios, where AI can bring greater efficiency, automating processes and accelerating development of new products, particularly in sectors of critical importance such as medical or banking. To accelerate further, it is necessary to invest in even faster networks with minimum latencies and more computing power is required. According to Hu, an increase in computing power between 10x and 100x in the next few years will be required to achieve the decarbonisation goals.
But above all, skills will be needed. Skills to set up and manage increasingly large and complex infrastructures. And also skills on software and machine learning models. However, this type of knowledge takes time, a lot of time, and as we have repeatedly pointed out on Edge9, the world of industry and research struggles to find the necessary talent. The solution? Focus on servitization: as a service solutions of all kinds. To make the most of the potential of the cloud, Huawei wants to introduce the concept of Technology as a Service alongside that of Infrastructure as a Service. The goal of the multinational is to provide software development, data management (data governance), content production and, inevitably, AI processes. In practice, it wants to act as a technological reference able to satisfy all the needs of its customers.

An example comes from pre-trained AI models for the pharmaceutical sector, which will allow to accelerate the search. In Hu’s vision, companies in the sector will not have to worry about having AI experts or managing their data, but can delegate the management of the technology to focus on aspects with greater added value. In this way, according to Hu, it is possible to greatly accelerate the development time of new drugs: instead of years it will take months. And, at the same time, costs will be reduced by up to 70%.

Medical is just one of the areas that Huawei is able to offer its expertise. Banking is another key sector, with cloud-native solutions that will enable new services to be offered to industry customers more quickly fintech.
The news for networking
In the area dedicated to products and solutions there were some innovations for the telecommunications sector, with products ready to support Wi-Fi, such as the access point AP-AirEngine 8771-X1T. We are talking about a device equipped with an SFP port, essential to support the maximum (theoretical) speed of 30 Gbps on three bands: 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz and 6 GHz.

A device that goes well with switching solutions CloudEngine S16700, capable of supporting transfer rates up to 400 Gbps and designed for large campuses. However, the ICT giant has not limited itself to devices and has also presented a new type of hybrid cables, which allow you to transfer both data and power. Typically, PoE (Power over Ethernet) devices are used to reduce the number of cables and simplify installations, but this is only possible for copper cables. On fiber optic cables it is impossible to transfer current: Huawei has therefore developed “double” cables, with both connectors.
These solutions are part of the range CloudCampus 3.0 + Simplified Solutionwhich can be managed remotely, via the cloud, thus not requiring the presence of specialized personnel on the campuses: the entire infrastructure, even in multiple campuses, can be kept under control by an external MSP.

One aspect that Huawei has been keen to emphasize is that of availability. It is useless to announce products if in practice, due to the chip and supply chain crisis, you have to wait a very long time to be able to receive them. The company launched the FastTrack initiative, and promises to deliver the networking devices to its customers within two weeks of ordering.
