Eni bet on “technological neutrality” to get to decarbonise the transport sector. Therefore, the company intends to invest in various technologies to achieve this important goal. Technologies such as, for example, i biofuels. Last November, Eni reported on his work on HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), a biofuel that he described as “made with 100% biogenic component and produced largely from waste raw materials, residues and waste deriving from transformation processes of vegetable products or from crops not in competition with the food chain“.
So, a biofuel that the company said could be used without problems in the Euro 5 and Euro 6 diesel engines. Now, Eni has announced that the new biofuel HVOlutionthe first Eni Sustainable Mobility diesel produced with the 100% renewable raw materialsis on sale at the first 50 stations Eni throughout Italy. By the end of March 2023, however, this fuel will be available at 150 points of sale. Eni informs that to identify the stations offering this biofuel, it is possible to use the Eni Live app or the Enilivestation website.
On this new product, Eni states:
HVOlution can contribute to the immediate decarbonisation of the transport sector, including heavy-duty ones, taking into account exhaust emissions, because it can be used with current infrastructures and in all approved engines, with unchanged performance.
This new biofuel is produced by Eni in the refineries in Venice and Gela which thanks to the investment made since 2014 have been transformed into biorefineries (since the end of 2022 they are, the company points out, “palm oil free”). For the new fuel, Eni uses the Ecofining proprietary technology which allows waste vegetable raw materials and non-edible oils to be treated to produce HVO biofuel of which Eni Sustainable Mobility is the second largest producer in Europe.
HVOlution is a biofuel made from 100% pure HVO. The company adds that before starting its marketing at service stations, pure HVO was used by various customers on vehicles such as those for the movement of passengers with reduced mobility in airports and on commercial vehicles for logistics . Furthermore, Eni underlines that added to diesel, since 2016 HVO biofuel is present at 15% in the Eni Diesel + product, available in over 3,500 service stations in Italy. HVOlution pure biofuel plays a fundamental role because it can already make an important contribution to the decarbonisation of mobility, including heavy transport. This product enriches the offer at service stations, alongside the current offer of low-carbon products, such as electric top-ups, and services for people on the move: Eni Sustainable Mobility’s goal is to integrate industrial and commercial assets along the entire the value chain, from the availability of raw materials to the sale of decarbonised products to the end customer.
