A startup managed to complete the first test flight with a 19-seat aircraft fed in part with an engine a hydrogen and batteries. It is the largest aircraft ever flown using hydrogen. The success of the trial marks a new one records for L’low-carbon aviation.
The flight of the plane ZeroAviathe Anglo-American startup developing hydrogen and electric systems for aircraft, took off from Cotswold airport in the United Kingdom and lasted about 10 minutes. The engines on the left side of the aircraft they were powered entirely by a combination of a hydrogen engine and batteries, while the right side from fossil fuel to kerosene. The cockpit of the plane has been emptied to make room for the hydrogen tanks.
Hydrogen is one of the main ones alternatives to which work is being done to eliminate the most polluting fuels also in aviation, in a sector responsible for around 3% of global greenhouse gas emissions. However, this technology is not yet developed enough to be able to lift the largest planes, even if for Val Miftakhov, CEO of ZeroAvia, the success of the latest experiment is able to pave the way for a commercial launch.
The startup has made many test flights over several years, with smaller planes and varying levels of success. In 2021, for example, one flight powered solely by hydrogen was forced to land sustaining some damage, after the electric motors lost power during the voyage. Also for this reason, in the latest test, the startup decided to use a hybrid power supply.
