IKEA presented a new gadget for the smart home: it’s a device for the air quality monitoring inside the premises, and stands out for its compatibility with the much-talked-about Matter protocol on which giants such as Apple and Google also rely heavily. It’s called VINDSTYRKA, and it offers the following features:
- Measurement:
- PM2.5 fine dust
- Humidity
- Temperature
- TVOC (Concentration of Volatile Organic Compounds)
- Indication of the general level of quality with three colours: green, yellow and red
- Possibility to view the data also on the IKEA Home app (additional hardware is required, specifically the IKEA Matter hub, which is called DIRIGERA and has been available in Italy for a few months at around €60).
As for the last point, since the Matter protocol is intercompatible, it should also be possible to view the same information in Google Home, Apple HomeKit and Amazon apps and services.
IKEA notes that according to WHO 9 out of 10 people breathe polluted air even when they are indoors of homes, offices and shops. A monitoring system like VINDSTYRKA is therefore important to increase people’s awareness of this phenomenon which often goes unnoticed. It will still take a while before the device is purchasable: IKEA speaks of April 2023. For the moment we have no information on prices, but to have a vague reference it usually circulates around € 100.
