The European Chips Act continues on its way, but the semiconductor manufacturers of the Old Continent are wasting no time. Infineon Technologies has announced to have started the construction of a new plant for manufacturing analog, mixed-signal and power semiconductor components.
The new factory will be built on the site of Dresdenwith work expected to start this year e production for autumn 2026. The German Federal Government’s Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) has given the green light for the start of the work before the European Commission has finished its analysis for the disbursement subsidies: Infineon aims to raise around €1 billion, while the company aims to invest a total of €5 billionthe largest investment in its history.
“We are accelerating the pace of expanding our manufacturing capacity to take advantage of the growth opportunities presented by the megatrends of decarbonisation and digitalisation,” said Jochen Hanebeck, CEO of Infineon. “We see a growing structural demand for semiconductors, for example for use in renewable energies, data centers and e-mobility. With the construction of the 300mm Smart Power Fab in Dresden we are establishing the necessary prerequisites to successfully meet the growing demand for semiconductor-based solutions.”
Infineon’s investment aims to be a major contributor to the European Commission’s stated goal of achieving a 20 percent global share in semiconductor manufacturing by 2030.
The German company’s commitment should create around 1,000 highly skilled jobs. “When fully operational, the Desdra Fab will allow Infineon to earn annually additional revenue equal to the scale of the investment,” underlined a press release.
