After a wave of criticism from users, including various celebrities, Adam Mosseri – the head of Instagram – has decided not to make (for now) many of the announced changes that would make the app more like TikTok. In a’interview issued to Platformer, Mosseri explained that for now the tests for viewing the home in full screen will be stopped and that users will see fewer posts recommended by the algorithm. The step back, continued Mosseri, was necessary for “Gather ideas” and work towards a better user experience.
The frustration of users came from the fact that, in recent weeks, Instagram was no longer the place to see friends’ photos, but that you were gradually turning into a copy of TikTok, clogged with advertising and content from untracked accounts. This week one petition on Change.org, which has now exceeded 200,000 signatures, entitled Make Instagram Instagram Again, it was shared by celebrities of the caliber of Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner. Platform usage data, says Mosseri, confirm the discontent of users.
For the moment, Instagram will reduce the number of recommended posts that are shown on the feed. Meta, as stated by Mark Zuckerberg himself, intends to launch a discovery engine, a content recommendation algorithm similar to that of TikTok. While about 15 percent of the posts we see on Facebook currently come from profiles we don’t follow, Zuckerberg intends to increase the percentage to 30 in 2023. But the transition to the new user experience will be temporarily interrupted.
Mosseri was quite clear: this is not a final decision. The long-term strategy will still see Instagram more focused on videos and the recommendation algorithm. In short, the executives of Meta have not given up the tiktokization of the app. They just postponed it.
