The first stone of Italvolt’s Italian Gigafactory, a Swedish company founded by Lars Carlstrom, who is also its CEO, will be laid in the spring of 2023 in full compliance with the calendar of works, which started in February 2021; the production center, once completed, will be a center of excellence at European level not only for the research and development of cells for electric batteries, but also for their recycling, as confirmed by the collaboration, recently drawn up, between the company and the Milan Polytechnic. Gigafactory in Scarmagno, Piedmont, will initially produce battery cells Li-ion MNC (nickel, manganese, cobalt) with silicon anodes but in the future it could also move towards the development of solid state cells.
Interviewed by eeNews Europe, Carlstrom said “We will not make battery packs yet, we are focusing only on the cells … The battery is the car platform and has to be designed by the car manufacturer. For this to happen there has to be a collaboration between the cell manufacturer, the car manufacturers and the supply chain “. The Swedish CEO has clear ideas and does not intend to take the risk of taking the longest step: in addition to the progress of the bureaucratic phases for building permits, which recently reached the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Company and local public administrations, has established numerous Italian and international collaborations. With AECOM dry rooms will be built, the clean rooms in which to assemble the components of the cells, and the best production processes will be identified to increase the resilience of lithium-ion batteries, minimizing waste in the life cycle of the project. AVL and ABB the aspects of electrification and robotic automation of the plant will follow, SD TV will deal with the control and certification of the production phases and finally American Manganese and the Milan Polytechnic they will follow Italvolt in the development of battery recycling processes, in order to have a closed loop.
Production will start in 2025with the goal of moving to mass production in 2027 and 2028. All batteries will have at least one quick charge function so that they can be reloaded in “five or six minutes, just like filling up with petrol”. At full production, the factory is expected to reach the production capacity of 45 GWhthe equivalent of cells for approx 550,000 cars. In early 2022, Lars Carlstrom also announced the launch of another battery factory, this time in the United States; the new company, Statevolt, has chosen Southern California’s Imperial Valley as its site and, once construction is complete, will have an annual production capacity of 54 GWh. The Swedish entrepreneur is also a co-founder of Britishvolt who plans to build a manufacturing plant in Northumberland County.
