When it comes to True wireless stereo headphones, JBL extension one of the brands with the most populated range and offers models for all budgets and needs. Almost too many, so much so that it is sometimes difficult to understand exactly which model best meets your needs.
Among the models all-roundercapable of adapting to different usage scenarios, we certainly find JBL Live Pro 2which are positioned at the top of the current range on Italian site of the manufacturerwith a price of 149.99 . It is a price that is not suitable for all budgets, but much lower than the top-of-the-range proposals of other brands, with which these JBL Live Pro 2s share in various characteristics.
JBL Live Pro 2
These earphones are built around a single 11 mm diameter dynamic driver, have a temple design and integrate 6 microphones with beam forming technology for voice capture during telephone calls. Furthermore, for a more natural experience with the VoiceAware function, it is possible to adjust the volume of the vocal feedback, i.e. the return of one’s voice in the earphones.
We then find a active noise cancellation system refined, with dual microphones (external and internal) for effective cancellation of external ambient sounds, with the possibility of activating the mode Ambient Aware to reconnect with the environment around us and talk to people around us without having to remove the headphones.
Among other features stand out the 40 hours of total autonomy, adding the 10 of the earphones to the 30 ‘stored’ in the carrying case. The latter can be recharged with the USB-C cable supplied in the package, but also with d systemsi wireless chargingby simply placing it on the active area.
Bluetooth 5.2 connectivity supports the connection Multipointwith the possibility of connecting two devices at the same time: for example the smartphone and the laptop or two different smartphones.
Finally we find the IPX5 certificationwhich guarantees watertightness against rain and sweat and allows the earphones to be used outdoors for sports even in less than perfect weather conditions.
The earphones are very light, tipping the scales a 4.8 grams each: in all, once inserted in the case, the weight is just over 48 grams.
JBL Live Pro 2: how they sound
The last memory I had of JBL TWS earphones dates back to testing the JBL Free X, which hadn’t impressed me on the sound front. I must say that on the contrary these JBL Live Pro 2, they turn out very pleasant from the first listen. There is the classic JBL signaturewith great bass focus as the general public likes it, but in this case accompanied by much more crystalline highs than usual, in some cases even too much.
The presence of an equalizer with customizable presets allows for excellent tuning of the sound signature and by ‘toning down’ the extremes a bit (highs and lows) a very pleasant profile is obtained suitable for a wide range of musical genres. The rendering of the voices is good, indeed, with a certain tendency to make them more prominent.
The sound always remains a bit too colorful for puristsbut on the other hand I always like to point out that this type of headphones is certainly not thought of as a monitor system, but rather as a source of mobile entertainment in possibly noisy environments, not suitable for the purest listening. The very engaging sound, with a fairly wide breadth, without being perceived as coming from the headphones; the instruments have good placement and good separation, even if the feeling that they are very close, as if you were in a very ‘intimate’ room.
JBL Live Pro 2 – noise cancellation
The function Active Noise Cancelling adaptive basically works well, removing most of the noise on the lower frequencies (such as the noise of the train or the background buzz in crowded environments), but as I am often experiencing on many of the TWS with ANC, it struggles to efficiently filter the higher frequencies, with the result that, in particular contexts, they are almost highlighted. Right now I’m typing to you from a mechanical keyboard and they can clearly hear the click of the keys, more acutely than without the noise canceling headphones turned on.
The same goes for the aircraft engines: during the cruise phase the noise reduction of the cabin is effective, but during the take-off phase the noise of the turbofans returns to be clearly heard.
JBL Live Pro 2: ergonomics and use
There excellent fit of the earphones: I personally find the earpiece design very comfortable, as the weight balance, with a part released right on the hollow where the earpiece develops, avoids excessive pressure inside the ear canal by the silicone inserts.
In addition, these JBL Live Pro 2 adopt an oval design of the sound outlet hole and consequently of the olives, a scheme that in my case works very well both in terms of ergonomics and in terms of closure of the ear canal, guaranteeing good basic insulation passive.
At the level of daily use, the JBL Live Pro 2 always perform very well: the lightning fast connection, even when Multipoint. If you receive a sudden phone call without wearing the earphones, simply remove one from the case to answer the call very quickly.
The JBL Headphone app allows you to manage all the functions of the headphones in a simple, even very clear from a graphic point of view, and also to carry out a seal testto understand if the earplugs are the right size and a test on the effectiveness of the noise canceling function, which allows the headphones to self-calibrate based on the response of the ear canal.
From the app it is also possible to customize the touch controls, which include a short press, a long press and multiple presses. Too bad there isn’t a combination that allows you to have everything under control. It is possible to select: track control, volume control, ANC/Aware mode, Voice Assistant, but only in pairs, one on each side.
Interesting is the possibility to adjust not only the noise cancellation level, but conversely also the reintegration level of ambient sounds, in order to find the most pleasant balance.
One obvious flaw pronounced latencyeven by setting the Video mode: this is very evident both when watching videos and playing games.
JBL Live Pro 2: final judgment
Given the placement of price of 149.99 euros, the JBL Live Pro 2 offer an excellent quality/price ratio and allow you to have quality true wireless stereo earphones, even for sports use, with fairly effective noise cancellation (enough to make the daily train journey less stressful for commuters), but above all with very engaging audio, which is not for purists, but which allows you to enjoy your favorite music very well. There are some flaws, but considering the price (half of some top-of-the-range models from other brands), it’s OK.
JBL Live Pro 2 vs. Sony Link Buds S
Wanting to make a comparison with other products on the market, with similar characteristics and blazon, Sony Link Buds S are the first TWS earphones that come to mind. The two products have in common the fact that they offer noise cancellation and environmental awareness features, have pocket-sized cases and stop the scale at 4.8 grams.
The Sony Link Buds S have a slightly smaller and lighter case, with a weight of 35 grams. They offer about the half the battery life of the JBL Live Pro 2 (6+14 hours versus 10+30). In both cases we find touch controls and a companion app that allows you to manage various sound parameters, noise reduction and the re-introduction of ambient sounds in the headphones.
Sonically the JBLs are more ‘punchy’ and, even with an EQ that reduces the highs and lows a bit, have a sonic signature to v. In comparison, the Link Buds S have more linearity, with more pronounced mids. Among the characteristics of Sony the compatibility with the format 360 Reality Audiofor a personalized holographic rendering of the sounds, which requires the use of compatible services (often accessible only with premium profiles).
In terms of noise canceling there is no story: Sony Link Buds S benefit from all the work done by the Japanese giant in recent years and, although they are not at the level of the top of the WF-1000XM4 range, they stand out among all the products in the segment for the effectiveness with which they reduce noise on everything the spectrum, including higher frequencies. As mentioned, however, the effectiveness of the JBLs on the most annoying noises (such as that of means of transport) is still good and suitable for many of the common needs.
As far as ergonomics is concerned, it depends a lot on the conformation of each person’s ears, but personally for commuting situations I prefer the temple design, which I find has a more secure and stable support in the ears between the tragus and antitragus, while the design it articulates inside the concha, it is less stable and with greater pressure than the insert inside the ear canal. Slight differences in the level of protection against water: IPX5 Live Pro 2 and IPX4 for Link Buds S.
Sony Link Buds S list are more expensive (180 ), but they are offered for one lowest street price, with several online stores offering them at 129, a price that makes them decidedly competitive, compared to the list price of 149 of the JBL Live Pro 2, which coincides with the street price. Those who love the temple design, the JBL sound signature and want many hours of battery life (and wireless charging) can opt for the Live Pro 2, while those who want maximum noise cancellation at an attractive price could find the Sony Link Buds It’s a more suitable product.
