The wait is over. Twenty-five years after the second, third and final season of the series The Kingdom by Lars von Trier was previewed at the Venice Film Festival (and, therefore, visible on the platform MUBI).
The Kingdom Exodus it takes up the events of the Rigshospitalet hospital, a building built over a swamp where once the dyers soaked their sheets which they then spread for bleaching. A place “possessed” by the evil that medicine and science can only delude themselves into having tamed.
Lars von Trier did not accompany the series to the Lido. A few days before the start of the festival, his staff communicated that health reasons prevented him from being present. At 66, the director is seriously ill with Parkinson’s. But he still wanted to be there in video link to tell how and why he decided to give an ending to the project.
“I’ve had ups and downs in life, also because of alcohol“, tells. “I got to a point where I felt I needed to work and a pretty easy way was to resume The Kingdom. Creative energy can turn into anxiety if you don’t use it to accomplish something. Writing this third season made me feel good“. And on the boom in seriality in general, he adds: “It can be interesting for a director to have more time to develop a story and its characters. When the first episode of The secrets of Twin Peaks I thought it was absolutely fantastic“.

What we can reveal is that at the beginning of the first episode in the close-up of a woman’s eye we see an image of the director in a tuxedo that dates back to the second season. “What do I think of the version of me today then? Humor that, in fact, pours with both hands in the dialogues and situations of the series as it had already done in previous seasons. Particularly when it comes to staging the conflict of mentality between Danes and Swedes.
