OPINION:
It may simply be human to desire the acceptance and approval of those around you, but it doesn’t always yield positive results. For example, unguided youth link themselves to violent gangs and behave accordingly. Political ideologues attach themselves to counterproductive group think, some viewing police as unnecessary and evil, others usurping the right of parents to instruct and direct their own children.
In the realm of politics, many rational adults admit the U.S. military’s withdrawal from Afghanistan was botched. Others recognize that current inflation was caused by too much money chasing too few goods. Yet when asked whom they will support in the upcoming election, many respond, “My party, of course. Why do you ask?”
Remaining loyal to a political “party” when its policies yield negative consequences doesn’t reflect mental or moral superiority; it suggests democracy is failing. We are all wrong from time to time. The wise among us admit as much and change course.
