OPINION:
Just when I thought I had seen every taxpayer abuse by politicians, here comes President Biden with his plan to “forgive” student loan debts (“Betsy Davos rips Biden student debt plan as ‘100% illegal,’ say power rests with Congress,” Web, Aug. 30).
First of all, to announce such an absurd action so close to the midterm elections is an insult to the common sense of voters. Even some Democrats are uncomfortable with this program, which could “forgive” up to $20,000 of student debt and pretty much guarantees up to $10,000 for debtors making less than $125 million a year.
What about those millions of kids who were diligent and stepped up to the plate, sacrificed after entering the job market and repaid their debt — with interest? My son was one of those.
What has Biden accomplished here other than buying votes for the November election? The plan does not help the many still-unemployed college graduates living in their parents’ basements, and it cheats the U.S. taxpayer.
Unfortunately, the only apparent recourse we have on this student-loan giveaway is to remember long and hard when we enter the voting booth.
