OPINION:
Dinesh D’Souza received a five-year jail sentence for contributing $20,000 to a friend’s political campaign — but Mark Zuckerberg was free to spend $400 million to influence a presidential election with severe global consequences (“Mark Zuckerberg learns the hard way that politics is a full-contact sport,” Web, Nov. 1).
Is there a more blatant example of corruption at the most critical spot in our so-called democracy than the buying and selling of elections?
The real question is, why is money from outside a state allowed? Why should money decide elections in the first place?
Candidates should be given free time on TV to explain their positions and proposals. We could then assess their integrity from seeing and hearing them debate their opponents on truly relevant issues.
Another real question: Why was such a feeble candidate even nominated for president?
