OPINION:
Jennifer Harper makes some excellent points about college finances (“Inside the Beltway,” Web, Aug. 30). However, like so many, she only describes the problem and finds no one who is offering solutions. Well, I have a few.
One, reduce availability of federal assistance to universities by 1% for every percentage point over inflation that a university has increased tuition over, say, the past 25 years. Second, move federal research grants to universities that pass a given threshold of tuition. There were 5,999 four-year accredited universities in the 2019-2020 academic year. Surely there are some deserving, qualified schools in that number that aren’t getting their share due to congressional budget earmarks.
Readers, I am sure you can develop some better ideas. Get them out in the public domain so that we, the people — not the 535 individuals in Congress — are once again the voice of the government.
