LG Electronics presented the novelties of the 2023 range of its OLED televisions which reach the third generation. The starting point on which to build this year’s evolution is the technological base presented last year, which is here improved in some aspects so as to provide an image quality that for LG does not want to be only “the best” available on the market. market, but which pursues the aim of bringing the viewer “inside the content”, to achieve the greatest possible immersion.

LG OLED G3, in the 65-inch version.
LG’s 2023 range of OLED TVs consists of the A3 series, B3, C3, G3 and Z3 in order from entry-level to top of the range (even if the A3 series will not arrive on the Italian market and the Z3 series, with 8K panel, will be available later in the year). The differentiation is the one that LG already operates on previous generations: the B3 series dedicated to those looking for quality 4K televisions with OLED technology at affordable prices, the C3 series which represents the meeting point between high-level technologies and price, and the G3 series as the flagship of the entire range, thanks to some exclusive technologies (we’ll see better a little later) and to the “gallery design” with flush-to-wall mounting.
The B3 series will be available in sizes from 55, 65 and 77 inchesfor the G3 series the measure from is also added 83 inches and finally for the C3 series there are also the versions from 48 and 42 inches.
The panel that equips the G3 series televisions is an updated version of the deuterium OLED-EX panels used last year, and which this time goes by the name of OLED-MLA (Meta-lit Lens Array). We therefore find all the advantages already seen last year, to which is added a new structure of the panel which provides for the use of a particular layer of microlenses in order to improve light transmission to reach higher luminance peaks, and at the same time preserve the organic substrate of self-illuminating LEDs. LG guarantees its OLED panels for 5 years.
Ai Alpha9 Gen6
To pilot the panel we find, on the G3 and C3 series, the image processor Ai Alpha9 Reality Gen6 (for the B3 series instead we note the presence of the Alpha7 Gen6 image processor), which introduces three technologies in particular: Ai Super Upscaling, Tone Mapping Pro and HDR Expression Enhancer.
Ai Super Upscaling takes care of improving the image quality with contents in resolution lower than the native 4K of the panel, paying attention to the creative intent of the author of the content: if, for example, we are watching a film in which the image is characterized from grain, the upscaling engine will be able to distinguish it from noise and preserve it even after processing, so as to keep the appearance of the image as close to the original.
The algorithms of Tone Mapping they are further developed this year and are able to operate on over 20,000 areas, with the aim of expanding the dynamic range of the image and bringing it closer to that perceivable by the human eye. HDR Expression Enhancer instead works in synergy with the Tone Mapping algorithms, but this time to apply tone mapping curves to specific elements of the image (faces, objects, backgrounds) so as to obtain a better three-dimensional perception of the scene.
All the image processing algorithms are obviously not available in Filmmaker Mode, the purpose of which is precisely to faithfully preserve the creative intent behind the contents. Instead, they are available to the user for all other modes, although LG points out that they may not be accessible if the contents being played are copy-protected.

LG OLED C3, in the 42-inch version.
The Alpha9 processor also takes care of processing the audio signal, again with the help of AI algorithms. Among the new features that concern the audio sector there are Ai Clear Sound, Auto Balance and Virtual 9.1.2 mode, with the aim of making the audio scene more engaging and immersive, but also balanced on the basis of the environment in which the TV will be placed.
We talked earlier about higher luminance levels: this is especially true for the G3 series. In fact, technology is exclusive to this line Brightness Booster Max which, also thanks to the exclusive presence of a heat sink, allows to achieve a 70% higher maximum luminance (for the 55, 65 and 77 inch sizes) compared to conventional OLED televisions (the B3 series, remaining within the LG proposal). At the moment there are no official rating data, but the indication is that for these televisions it is possible to slightly exceed 2000 nits in the 3% window with native/vivid profile, and slightly below 1500 nits in the 10% window with calibrated profile. As far as the 83-inch G3 model is concerned, the luminance increase is 30%, while for the C3 family we are talking about 20% more, again compared to conventional OLED panels.
Reserved for the G3 line then there is a special anti-reflection treatment of the panel (Super Anti Reflectivity Coating) more effective than previous generations, which has the effect of improving the viewing experience thanks to better perceived contrast and sharpness.
WebOS 23
Among the novelties in LG’s 2023 TV range there is also the new version of the WebOS smartTV operating system, which features a streamlined organization that promises a smoother and more responsive user experience. The main screen is now designed in a way that significantly reduces the need to scroll and also adds the new organization “Quick Cards“: these are “thematic” screens that collect apps and content with a specific theme, for example “Home Office”, “Game”, “Music”, “Sport” and so on. The new version of WebOS also offers the possibility of capillary customization also of the quick access menu in which the user can enter the menu items he accesses most frequently, avoiding having to go looking for them every time in the menus.
In terms of customization, functionality is also worth mentioning AI Picture Wizard, which allows the TV to adjust the picture parameters according to the user’s preferences. In fact, LG, while offering technologies capable of providing virtually impeccable images, recognizes that the user often wishes to personalize the behavior of the television according to their own tastes. To this end, the AI Picture Wizard will propose a group of 6 images starting from the same scene, and the user will be prompted to select the preferred one. The process is repeated several times, until the television determines all the settings (contrast, brightness, sharpness, saturation, and so on) that make it possible to generate the image closest to the viewer’s tastes.
WebOS 23 also introduces the Matter certification, the home automation protocol supported by the major electronics brands, so as to make the television a sort of “smart hub” through which it will be possible to govern other Smart Home devices. Matter certification will also be available for previous generation TVs via firmware update.
There is no shortage of features dedicated to gamers, even if with the 2023 edition LG pays more attention to the audio sector in a videogame key. The optimizations for image quality and reactivity therefore remain those encountered with the previous generation, but the Game mode is now enriched with equalization controls to better adapt the sound to the preferences (or needs) of the gamer.
Among the other novelties, the video camera is also worth mentioning LG Smart Camthat turns your TV into an interactive screen for video conferencing or video calling, e the SC9S soundbars (accompanied by sub-woofer) from 400W total power e SE6S, 100W. We underline the presence of the WoW Orchestra mode, which allows you to take advantage of any LG soundbar to reproduce a sound scene of greater spatiality.
Prices and availability still to be communicated.
