Many degrees can be taken simultaneously, UGC is considering this scheme again

Students may soon be able to pursue multiple degrees from different universities or even from the same university. The University Grants Commission (UGC) has started considering this. The UGC has constituted a panel, headed by its vice-chairman Bhushan Patwardhan, to examine the issue of pursuing two degree programs from the same university or different universities simultaneously.

However, this is not the first time that the commission is probing the issue. The UGC had also constituted a committee in the year 2012 and the same was discussed, but the idea was eventually scrapped.

A senior UGC official said, “The panel was constituted late last month and has already met once. Now consultations are being held with various stakeholders to ascertain the feasibility of the deliberations.

This committee also considered

The committee of 2012, headed by the then Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, Furqan Qamar, had recommended that a student admitted to a degree program under regular mode should be eligible for a maximum of one additional degree program under the same or more than one open or distance mode. may be allowed to proceed.

However, two degree programs cannot be allowed simultaneously under the regular mode as it may create logistical, administrative and academic problems.

The report said that a student pursuing a degree program under the regular mode may be allowed to pursue a maximum of one certificate, diploma, advanced diploma. The panel’s report had said that PG diploma programs are conducted in the same university or from other institutions simultaneously in regular or open and distance mode.

UGC official said-

According to UGC officials, “The commission had then sought the comments of the statutory councils on the committee’s report and the responses received did not support the idea of ​​allowing students to pursue multiple degree programs simultaneously.” So the plan didn’t stop.

“Now it has been decided to revisit this idea as there have been many changes in technology,” the official said. There are many people who want to pursue specialized courses in addition to their regular degree programs.
