It’s why we study and then review before an exam or meeting with a client. The same goes for when we meet a person for the first time: we cannot expect his name to flash to mind immediately. Lega defines it as the “tip of the tongue phenomenon “: we cannot remember names because we have never learned them correctly. Fortunately, there are ways to improve your ability to remember them.

The value of the repetition

It is easier to retrieve something that we have extracted from our mind a short time ago. Lega recommends return to someone you have just met shortly after the first meeting. At a party, for example, a few minutes after introducing yourself to someone – Giulia in this case – you could go back to her and say: “Sorry, did you say Giulia?”. This process will determine whether or not you will be able to remember a certain name in the future. Repeat a name whenever you can it will help you to fix it in your mind.

Associations

Suppose we meet a colleague with a common name that we are sure not to forget. The problem is that you haven’t made a cognitive effort; you have not created the name in yours mindand for this you will forget it “ explains Horsley.

After hearing a person’s name, repeat it and then try to give it meaning. In the case of a Gianni, you could associate the name with the yellow color. Horsley recommends doing this exercise to the fullest 20 seconds after hearing a name for the first time.

Physical characteristics

Look for a salient feature in the face of a person and associate it with the name. In the case of a hypothetical Riccardo, for example, curly hair. Using a little creativity to link an image to a face can serve as a reminder for the next meeting.

Useful apps

Personally, I use the app Note from Apple on my phone as if it were an extension of my brain. When I come up with an idea for an item, or need to add something to my shopping list, I only have nowhere to look. Horsley, however, suggested a new use for the app. After meeting a person, enter their name, some information (profession, number of children) and the place where you met. Horsley also recommends Evernote, Google Keep And Trello. Having a reminder on hand increases the chances of you going back to it.

The importance of lists

In my old job, I encouraged my clients to use to-do lists. For some, it’s a way to stay on track. Others argued that the lists didn’t work, but then admitted they never looked at them. If you make the effort to put information about a person on a list, take the time to re-read it, especially before an event. Horsley uses Apple Notes and sets a reminder every Monday to go through the folders she’s created. She then fixes a second two weeks apart, and so on, until she has the list memorized.
