If at the moment little can be done with regard to travel that requires the sending of material by air, the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team he tried to do his part in itthe continental transfers between the Grand Prix of Spa, Zandvoort and Monza and will continue on the same path also for the remaining races on European territory.
Mercedes has decided to feed hers 16 Actros Gigaspace trucks using Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO 100) instead of the usual diesel fuel. The biofuel test was carried out for all 1,400 kilometers of journeys, except for the last 20 kilometers, where they ran out of biodiesel and the trucks had to fall back on old diesel fuel from fossil origins.
HVO a biofuel of origin 100% vegetableobtained by vegetable oils and fats by recovering waste and exhausted oils. Thanks to its nature it can be added to fossil diesel in high percentages, even much higher than the 7% allowed by the European standard EN 590 for traditional biodiesel (FAME). To give an Italian example, Eni Diesel + premium diesel contains 15% of this biocomponent.
The experiment of the Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 team also proved the feasibility of the complete replacement of fossil fuels with biodiesel and represents an interesting benchmark. According to data released by Mercedes, the use of biofuel would have saved more than 44 tons of CO2 emissions compared to the use of a fossil fuel, with a cut of 89%.
100% biofuels by 2026 in Formula 1
Experimentation on biofuels is already active also on racing cars, albeit with lower percentages: the petrol E10 used from this season it contains 10% bioethanol. The Formula 1 circus aims to make a full shift to using biofuels by 2026.
