The new Mercedes EQE SUV has finally been presented. The new electric SUV is one of the most important models in the German brand’s ambitious electrification strategy. Production will start in December at the Mercedes plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama (USA). Prices for the Italian market have not yet been disclosed. Now let’s see all the main features.
DESIGN AND INTERIORS
The new electric SUV from Mercedes measures 4,863mm long x 1,940mm wide x 1,686mm high. The wheelbase measures 3,030 mm. Thus, the EQE SUV is more compact than the EQE Sedan which has a length of 4,946 mm. The trunk volume is 520 liters. By folding the rear seat backrests, it is possible to have a capacity of 1,675 liters.
Frontally, the SUV is characterized by the presence of the Black Panel bezel. A Black Panel front with Mercedes-Benz Pattern, a three-dimensional star motif, is also available on request. As standard we find the High Performance LED headlights with DIGITAL LIGHT technology as an option. At the front there is also a bumper protector which, depending on the equipment, is bright or dark chromed and integrates the air intake grille.
At the rear, depending on the equipment version, the black area of the lower bumper houses a chrome-plated bumper guard. The optical groups are connected to each other by a light bar. Mercedes EQE SUV can have alloy wheels from 19 to 22 inches.
Speaking of the interior, there is plenty of room for passengers thanks to the use of a specific platform for electric cars. Headroom, for example, in the first row of seats is 1,007 / 1,002 mm, while in the second it is 1,001 / 1,000 mm. The cockpit is obviously very refined and also features a lot of technology. Indeed, the EQE SUV can count on the latest generation of the MBUX infotainment system. In particular, on request it is possible to have the MBUX Hyperscreen infotainment system thanks to which the entire dashboard becomes a “single display”. Under the common cover glass, the high-resolution screens seem to blend seamlessly with each other (three displays: 12.3-inch instrument cluster, 17.7-inch infotainment and 12.3-inch front passenger screen).
Obviously, the system can be updated via OTA. Furthermore, again through the OTA updates it will be possible, after the purchase, to activate, for a fee, a whole series of new additional functions. For example, ZYNC’s entertainment offering includes streaming video, on-demand content, interactive experiences, local video programs, sports, news, games and more.
ENGINES AND SAFETY
The new Mercedes EQE SUV will be available in EQE 350+, EQE 350 4MATIC and EQE 500 4MATIC versions.
Let’s start from EQE 350+ version which has a single electric motor and, therefore, rear-wheel drive. We have 215 kW with 565 Nm of torque. The 90 kWh battery is able to offer a range of 480-590 km. Let’s move on to model EQE 350 4MATIC which can count on a powertrain with double electric motor. So, we also have all-wheel drive. The power is still 215 kW but the torque rises to 765 Nm. The battery does not change but the range drops to 459-558 km.
Finally, the EQE 500 4MATIC version it always has a double electric motor and four-wheel drive. The overall power, however, rises to 300 kW with 858 Nm of torque. The distance with the 90 kWh battery reaches 460-547 km. The accumulator can recharge in direct current up to 170 kW. In alternating current up to 11 or 22 kW depending on the charger mounted on board the SUV. The benefits were not disclosed.
For its high-voltage batteries, Mercedes issues the customer with a performance certificate: 10 years of service life or a mileage of 250,000 kilometers with a certain residual capacity.
The electric SUV offers the ECO, COMFORT, SPORT and INDIVIDUAL driving modes of the DYNAMIC SELECT. Versions with all-wheel drive also offer OFFROAD mode for driving on dirt roads. A steered rear axle with a maximum steering angle of 10 degrees is available as an option.
Speaking of safety, the new Mercedes EQE SUV can count on several driving assistance devices. As standard we find ATTENTION ASSIST, the active brake assist system, the active anti-skid system, the parking package with camera for assisted reversing and the automatic speed limit detection system. Additional driving assistance systems are included in the specific package, available in conjunction with the Advanced Plus package.
