There Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC) has fined Meta, the parent company of Facebook, for 265 million euros following an investigation into the exposure of the data of over 533 million users of the well-known social network. A case that exploded in April 2021 and involved more than 35 million Italian accounts.
In all these months the DPC has examined whether Facebook followed the GDPR, i.e. the European data protection rules. The leaked information, posted on a hacker community forum, included full names, phone numbers, locations and birthdates of Facebook users from 2018 to 2019.
At the time, Meta said the attacker obtained the information through a vulnerability the company fixed in 2019 and that it was the same information involved in a previous leak reported in January 2021.
The €265 million fine is the third imposed by the Irish DPC this year. In March Meta was fined $18.6 million for failing to properly keep records in connection with a series of 2018 data breaches that exposed the information of up to 30 million Facebook users. The European regulator also lifted a $402 million fine against Meta in September following an investigation into Instagram’s handling of teen data.
Meta was then fined nearly $700 million by the DPC in 2022not counting the 267 million against WhatsApp last year.
“We have made changes to our systems during the relevant period, including removing the ability to scrape our features in this way using phone numbers. Unauthorized data scraping is unacceptable and against our rules and we will continue to work with our colleagues on this industry challenge. We are carefully reviewing this decision,” a Meta spokesperson said.
