Microsoft is testing the advertising in Windows 11this time in the Start menu: and once again the reactions are anything but enthusiastic. Apparently the news is being distributed for a small subset of users registered in the Insider circuit starting from build 25227, distributed in the Dev Channel in mid-October; it immediately went unnoticed because Microsoft described it as

a small change to the Start menu where some Insiders will see badges in their user profile that warn them that certain actions must be performed

These notifications of actions to take include completing your profile, activating a Microsoft account or activation of the OneDrive cloud storage service, as you can see in the images below shared online by the well-known insider Albacore. For the moment other examples have not emerged, but it is clear that once the mechanism is refined, the imagination is the only real limit.

It is not the first time that Microsoft tries to advertise in what can be called key elements of the Windows interface. Over the past few months, there had been evidence of File Explorer; Microsoft had specified that their distribution in public builds was not expected and it was an error, but has not denied the existence of actual tests.

Furthermore, we are always a bit ‘on the edge (and it is clear that it is intended), but one could consider publicity the insistence with which Microsoft prompts the user to stay with Microsoft Edge when trying to download a competitor’s browser (Chrome, for example). Finally, but there we should also have a word with the producers, there is the question of pre-installed links in the Start menu to third-party apps such as TikTok, Candy Crush and many others.
