Motorola Rizr is a Razr that believed (much) more

Motorola has been revitalizing the Razr series for a few years now, namely its own folding clamshell, but at MWC 2023 he brought something different: Rizrwhich is not a typo (rizr was the name of an old series of slider phones), but a concept of smartphones which unfolds.

In fact, we basically have a 5 inches in the unusual 15:9 ratio, which by stretching can reach a more generous 6.5 inches in 22:9, thanks to its screen pOLED manufactured by BOE Display: just double click on the power button and about 3 seconds of waiting!

The apps get longer, the home screen rearranges itself, and even the wallpaper itself adapts to the new format: Motorola seems to have thought of everything, even the fact of being able to take advantage of the folded part of the display, which slides on the back cover when the Rizr is ” compact”, to show a preview of the rear camera to your subject, or even an animated smiley, perhaps to make some children smile.

You can also use this portion of the display to show les notificationstime and other information, or simply turn it off altogether.

You can also set “automatic stretching“, for example by turning the phone to landscape during a YouTube video, or if you have to write an email on Gmail.

The weight is 210 gramstherefore not even off the scale for a 6.5” (but there are many if you look at it as a 5”), but the thickness is decidedly more marked in every situation, and all this despite a battery alone 3,000mAhwhich for a 6.5” seem very few.

And the front camera? It is hidden by the sliding mechanism, so much so that you can only use it in compact mode, sliding the screen further down a few more millimetres.

In many ways this Rizr looks like a smartphone done and donebut for Motorola it’s just a concept. It probably means that it would not survive daily use for various reasons, from the resistance of the display, always exposed and not protected from folding as in the classic fold/flip, to the concerns we have already expressed about the battery, to say the least that we do not know/have considered.
