Netflix has definitively said stop sharing passwords, a phenomenon now so widespread in our country and in the rest of the world as to lead the video streaming platform to this drastic decision. The ongoing tests have been completed, the new rules for using the service will come into effect by the end of this March. But what does this change mean in practice?

Put simply, from now on the free sharing of a Netflix account will no longer be granted in any way with one or more parties outside your household.

DOMESTIC CORE: WHAT

For household means a group of people who live in the same location with the account holder.

  • How does Netflix know: information on IP address, device ID and account activity is collected to understand if the TV, PC, smartphone or tablet used for viewing are connected to the main position.
  • What you need to do to prove that you belong to the same household: connect via the WiFi network of the main location at least once every 31 days.
  • How to check: just log into your account and check the connected devices. These can eventually be removed from your list.
  • What if an unknown connected device is found: in addition to removing it, it is recommended to change your password and select Sign out of your account on all devices. Netflix can block viewing from the device of those outside the home: in this case, to continue using the service, it is necessary to register a new account, but if you are travelling, you can ask for a temporary code to access Netflix for 7 days .

SHARING NETFLIX WITH THOSE OUTSIDE THE HOME

If you are not part of the household, you are now necessarily required to transfer your profile to a new account. The plans available are

  • Basic with advertising: €5.49/month
  • Basic: €7.99/month
  • Standard: €12.99/month
  • Premium: €17.99/month

It’s possible change plans or cancel your subscription at any time. Netflix specifies that it will not be charged automatically the share if you share the account with someone who does not live with you.

PROFILE TRANSFER

In the case of profile transfer, the following will not be lost: tips, viewing history (including evaluations), My list, saved games, settings And various informations (name, icon, participation in tests). Payment data is not transferred. The profile transfer function can also be used in case you add an extra user.

By transferring your profile you become the owner of the new account, Netflix will keep “a backup copy of this profile to the original account“.

WHAT WE DON’T KNOW YET

By the end of March, therefore, it will no longer be possible to access a Netflix account in cases where you do not belong to the same household. We will be faced with two possibilities: create a new account independent by transferring the data as indicated in this article or remain connected to the same account upon payment of an additional amount.

A figure which, however, has not yet been disclosed: in the course of the tests conducted to date, a 25% increase of the original rate (case of the Standard plan). If that were the case, each subaccount could cost tbetween 4 euros for the Standard plan and 6 euros for the Premium plan.
