The end of the Nissan Leaf’s career is approaching. According to a report by Atomotive News who had the opportunity to speak directly with a source within the Japanese company, the electric sedan will be phased out over the next few years. The end of production would be expected for the middle of the decade and, therefore, around 2025.
Like all reports, of course, this too must be taken with due caution. However, it is not the first time that there has been talk of the retirement of this model and the arrival of a possible heir.
A new generation of the Leaf would not be expected. From what is known, at the moment, it should come a whole new model which will be produced in the Sunderland factory in the UK and which will be a crossover. We know almost nothing about the future electric crossover, except that it will rest on CMF-EV platform and that should arrive within a couple of years.
Will Nissan “save” at least the name of the Leaf? There is no information about it and, therefore, it is possible that the future electric crossover may have a different name.
In any case, the Leaf was a very important model for Nissan. It is, in fact, one of the first electric systems designed for the masses. Introduced in 2010, today we are in the second generation. Over time it has been improved by also introducing battery packs of increasing capacity that have made it possible to offer ever greater autonomies.
Time, however, passes and today competition in the electricity sector is increasingly fierce. In addition, the Nissan Leaf pays for some technical choices that are no longer adequate. For example, still use the CHAdeMO connector for refills in direct current. It is a standard that is less and less used in Europe and which will disappear. In addition, the cars adopt a battery pack without an air conditioning system. A technical choice that has led, over time, to some problems of premature degradation of the accumulators.
There is therefore a need for a much more modern model to complement the new Nissan Ariya. Recall that Nissan’s growth plan provides for the launch of 15 new electric cars by 2030. Currently, the Leaf is offered in two versions, one with a 40 kWh battery and 110 kW engine and one with a 62 kWh accumulator and engine. from 160 kW. In Italy, prices start at € 33,170. This model is compatible with state incentives.
