Nothing done for the hypothesis of extending the current contracts for the television broadcasting rights of Serie A matches by another 2 years: the so-called Lotito amendment, named after the senator of Forza Italia (and president of Lazio) who proposed it, has been removed from the Milleproroghe decree. To briefly summarize the positions: Lotito is dissatisfied, Serie A as well, consumer associations are satisfied. To understand the whys and wherefores a little better, it is necessary to make a brief summary and recap of how we got here. Let’s go by points:
- The “Lotito standard” did not necessarily guarantee the extension, but implied the possibility of doing so, subject to appropriate market surveys and assessments of better quality/conditions by the competition. The idea was that extensions could never be longer than 5 years.
- The current contracts will expire at the end of the 2023/2024 Serie A season. If the “Lotito standard” had passed, it would have been possible to extend the current situation, mainly managed by DAZN and Sky, for another two years.
- Consumer associations (including Altroconsumo, as can be read below) are opposed to the hypothesis of extension because they consider the current quality level of the offer inadequate. As we know, DAZN users have experienced several disruptions during some matches.
So, expanding a bit on what was mentioned at the beginning of the article, the positions are more or less the following: Lotito is unhappy for obvious reasons (after all, the proposal was his), Lega Serie A is unhappy because he doesn’t have the two extra years to prepare its channel, consumer associations are happy because there is at least the possibility that with the next rights holder the service will be of better quality and it is imagined that DAZN and Sky are happy because they will not be forced to pay for another two years a very expensive contract. Some comments of interested parties:
Claudius Lotito:
They will have to explain the reason to us, I don’t agree since I had tabled the amendment to implement it
Serie A League:
Still with regard to audiovisual rights, the Assembly also underlined that the hypothesis of a maximum two-year extension of the existing contracts with DAZN and SKY for audiovisual rights 2021/2024 represents a very useful option which, in a non- automatic and non-binding, it is strategically functional to the effort that the League, with all its Associates, is carrying out to guarantee the best and most efficient enhancement of Serie A for the years to come.
The Assembly therefore asks the Government and Parliament to assure the League and all the organizers of the championships of every professional sport this option, which has no burden on public finances.
