It’s the end of an era for Shield owners, as NVIDIA has announced that will close the GameStream function. Those unfamiliar with the Shield or GameStream, the feature allows owners of NVIDIA’s TV box to stream games from their PC. Naturally the PC and the set-top box must be connected to the same network and GeForce Experience must be installed on the PC. An email sent to some users notifies the company that the functionality will be lost in mid-February 2023.
The Nvidia email reads in full:
Starting in mid-February, a planned update to the NVIDIA Games app will begin rolling out to SHIELD owners. With this update, the GameStream feature will no longer be available. SHIELD users can continue to use GameStream until that time. Visit our FAQs for more information.
SHIELD users can stream games from their PC using the free Steam Link app. Visit the Steam Link site to learn more. We also encourage you to stream PC games from the cloud using NVIDIA GeForce NOW.
Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be much reason for Nvidia to keep GameStream running. In an official statement from NVIDIA, the company says GameStream will be turned off as part of an update to the NVIDIA Games app. The feature will be available to SHIELD owners until the middle of the month.
However, there is no specific date for the shutdown. Users will not be prompted to update their NVIDIA Games app and this may allow the feature to work after shutdown. According to the FAQ though, this is just a Band-Aid. Without the app update, all services that use it will not work. And that includes GeForce NOW. Basically, it’s better to upgrade.
