The theory that the GeForce RTX 4080 12 GBwhose launch was canceled by NVIDIA after user criticism of the strategy of launching two cards with the same name but significantly different characteristics (not just the amount of RAM), will become the RTX 4070 Ti. It was one of the most logical and plausible explanations, and is now also supported by the well-known leaker Kopite7kimi (a heavyweight of reputation, by the way, when it comes to video cards). Speaking to other users on Twitter, the source also argues that the launch of the card should happen relatively quickly – there is talk of January 2023.

If so, at this point it would not be impossible for the Ti variant of the card to come out earlier than the standard one – which is not an unprecedented fact, of course (a recent example is the RTX 3060). Naturally the big question remains the price: remember that in the original plans the card had to cost 899 dollars, while the 16 GB variant will cost 300 dollars more (for Italy the drain will be significantly higher – 1,109 and 1,479 euros respectively).

However, the two cards are profoundly different from each other. If the name suggests a “simple” (so to speak) variation in the amount of RAM on board, in reality the cards are actually based on two different GPUs – AD103 for the 16 GB, AD104 for the deleted 12 GB. The amount of multiprocessor streaming changes accordingly, and therefore of CUDA cores (9.728 VS 7.680), Ray tracing (76 VS 60) and Tensor (304 VS 240); finally, there are more than 8 TFLOPS of difference (single-precision or FP32 operations, in boost) between one and the other. Also reduced the memory bus, from 256 to 192 bits.

By the way, in the meantime AMD has announced the new Radeon RX 7000, saying that the Radeon RX 7900 XT will cost exactly the same as the canceled RTX 4080 12 GB, while the XTX flagship will require $ 100 more; but it is difficult to think that NVIDIA will maintain these prices given that both AMD cards even rank above the 16 GB RTX 4080 from a performance point of view (at least according to official data).
