The nominations of Oscars 2023as usual, gave us several surprises: from the amazing race of Everything Everywhere All At Once to the fifth nomination for Cate Blanchett, from the well-deserved nomination of golden boy Paul Mescal in the presence of a title “underdog” how To Lesliefrom Michelle Yeoh first asian woman nominated for best actress at a star’s revenge as Jamie Lee Curtisit cannot be said that emotions were lacking in the announcement of the titles competing for the statuettes on March 13th (also for Italy, with Pupils by Alice Rorhwacher among the best shorts). But there are also those who didn’t particularly celebrate after these announcements: let’s see who was, more or less unjustly, snubbed.
Female directors
Although in the last editions they have been right two women to win the Oscar for best director, namely Chloe Zhao and Jane Campion, the nominees in the same category are once again all male this year. And to say that the choice was there, since Gina Prince-Bythewood Of The Woman King to Charlotte Wells Of Aftersunpassing through Sarah Polley Of Women Talking.
actor categories
About The Woman Kingthe film was highly praised especially for the powerful performance of Viola Davis. The actress, already winner of the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2016 for Barriers, however, was not considered in any actor category. Among other large excluded also Margot Robbie for Babylonwhile many expected that Tom Cruise received a Best Actor nomination for the sequel to Top Guns.
Till
The heartbreaking true story of the 1955 murder of the fourteen-year-old Emmett Till at the hands of a group of racists and especially the struggle of the mother Mamie Till-Mobley to obtain justice became an equally important and moving film, but one that was practically ignored by the Academy. Too bad especially for the direction of Chinonye Chukwu and even more so for the interpretation of Danielle Deadwyler as Till-Mobley.
