There PEC, Certified Electronic Mail, has existed for 18 years now, even if initially it was not used much. Regulations have changed over time, and today anyone with a company or a VAT number must activate it by law, but ordinary citizens are also starting to understand the advantages of this technology which, to all intents and purposes, replaces the good old registered letter. How many? AgID indicates that in the last two months there are 14,414,551 active mailboxes. The most striking datum is the growth in activations compared to the same period of the previous year, exceeding 80%.

The most important provider on the market is Aruba, which manages just under 9 million PEC mailboxes.
The PEC is preparing to land in Europe
An aspect that deserves to be considered is the fact that these mailboxes are not only active and then forgotten addresses: in fact, their use is considerable, with 493 million messages exchanged in the last two months alonean increase of 12% compared to the same period of the previous year.
A success that has not gone unnoticed by the authorities, who are now aiming to adapt the certified e-mail to the European standard eIDAS. The latter, like the PEC, is designed to securely exchange messages that have legal value. AgID and the Certified Electronic Mail Managers who are part of AssoCertificatori, have announced that the process of definition and publication of the new ETSI EN 319 532-4 standard has been successfully completed. In particular, minimum requirements have been defined to ensure maximum interoperability with REM. Registered Electronic Mail for cross-border use of the service.
