Panasonic and Leica will jointly develop a mirrorless that will arrive in 2023

As we have written several times, the camera market is looking more and more in the direction of solutions mirrorless. The new DSLRs count “on the fingers of one hand” (for example the Pentax K3 III launched in April 2021) and the manufacturers are trying to battle each other to give the user the latest news. In this context and with a shrinking market, the announcement of a new one arrives mirrorless camera jointly developed between Panasonic And Leica.

This choice aims to optimize development costs and try to compete with brand which can boast higher sales (Canon, Sony). From the user’s point of view it could be a novelty that could bring some “fresh air” being able to count on the quality that the two producers can boast. However, information is currently still scarce.

Panasonic and Leica will develop a mirrorless camera

The information came thanks to an article by Japanese Nikkei newspaper. In particular it is written that Panasonic it will neither produce nor develop anymore Lumix compact cameras. The statement from a company spokesperson is quite clear (and in line with what was already expected) “we have stopped developing new models that can be replaced by a smartphone”. This does not mean that the current models will immediately go out of production, but we will not have to wait for new versions.

What will happen? Panasonic will then point in the direction of high-end mirrorless cameras for photography enthusiasts and professionals. This is a vision that seems to be shared in particular with Nikon which has made similar claims in the past and which is reflecting on its product portfolio. This kind of models, although more complex to produce, are also more profitable and therefore allow you to have better income (as long as you are able to sell enough units).

The Japanese company then added that it will aim to create a model mirrorless developed together with Leica which should arrive within a year (and therefore a presentation is expected around mid-2023). In the article, by voice of Panasonicwe read that “We are planning to release a mirrorless camera jointly developed with Leica, with which we have entered into a global partnership at the end of May, about a year from now.”.

As written, in May 2022, the two companies had announced one partnership for the development of new technologies with the brand L² Technology (Leica and Lumix). There mirrorless which we are talking about would therefore be the result of this agreement even if a lot of information about the specifications is missing even if it seems almost obvious to think that it will have an attack L-mount.
