Paper House: Korea Part 2 exalts, entertains and moves

We had decided to set aside the comparisons with the original but we allow ourselves an exception: history could have served us a cruel and fascist Korean Gandía but his analogue, the ex-spy Cha, escapes this fate, establishing himself as a figure of higher ideals. In Paper house: Korea the villains are always the leaders – never the pawns – but it is precisely the most exploited, in the last resort, who decide the fate of the game. The description of the powerful as immoral, corrupt and classist is recurrent in the cinema and in the seriality of Hallyu, as is the derivation of the action genre from Hong Kong cinema. The second part is more adrenaline-pumping, especially in the ninth episode which contemplates a “rescue mission” staged with excitement (false, but the connections are effective) sequence plan of a direction that rather than referring to the venerated 80s action of the former British colony is inspired by its evolution, a mix of Indonesian action movies and first person shooters.

It is definitive proof, if any were needed, that Paper house: Korea it did not start or develop on stellar pretensions: its authors did not aim for the masterpiece or cult status nor did they consider the expectations of the followers of the original (with the exclusion, perhaps, of the fanservice of the epilogue), but they dedicated themselves – and in a sense “ limited” – to pack a product for newcomers to the franchise, with an eye to the Asian audience. This second part is meant to entertain, excite, amuse, move and leave the viewer content – and hopefully with a lighter heart and a little more faith in humanity. In English they call them feel good movie (in this case, series) and finally the Money Heist Korean it is. Let’s just hope that his future doesn’t darken drastically, as a certain local tradition would suggest, as well as the continuation of the original.
