Qualcomm has announced two new premium wearable platforms: Snapdragon W5 + Gen 1 And Snapdragon W5 Gen 1born to offer high performance with low consumption, with the aim of revolutionizing the next generation of wearables.

Snapdragon W5 + Gen 1 represents the new flagship proposal of the company and is capable of offering 2x higher performance with 50% lower power consumption and size reduced by 30% compared to the previous generation. The new platform is based on a hybrid architecture consisting of a 4 nm system-on-chip and 22 nm always-on co-processor. It also supports the new Bluetooth 5.3 protocol and low-power states like Deep Sleep and Hibernate.

Qualcomm, much more power and efficiency with new wearable chips

Qualcomm’s first mobile SoC dates back to 2016, with the Snapdragn Wear 2100 directly derived from the mobile world. Two years later the company released Snapdragon Wear 3100 which introduced hybrid architecture with AON co-processor. In 2020 the Qualcomm Snapdragon 4100+ variant implemented a 12nm production process (compared to the 28nm of the two predecessors), while in 2022 with Snapdragon W5 + Gen 1 we pass to 4 nanometerswith all the components that have been redesigned.

The SoC integrated into the platform, defined Qualcomm SW5100, implements a 250MHz Cortex-A53 quad-core CPU (versus the previous version’s 50MHz quad-core), and is paired with dedicated modem and power management chips. In addition, the SoC is paired with a 22nm Cortex-M55 CPU co-processor (QCC5100) that implements all the internal components of the main SoC, as well as a dedicated machine learning module. The new architecture should allow, according to Qualcomm’s proclamations, premium performance combined with very low power consumption, all with a great ease of implementation by the partners.

The QCC5100 co-processor is in fact used 95% of the time and can manage displays, sensors, audio and notifications through the FreeRTOS interface. On the other hand, when it is necessary to take advantage of more advanced features, SW5100 is called into question (5% of the time), which can intervene in messaging operations, in the execution of applications, in camera and video recording functions, and manage fast 4G LTE connections and GPS. With the new platform Qualcomm promises 50% more autonomy on typical days of use, as well as the ability to enable advanced features more effectively, such as smooth video playback, navigation on 3D maps, real-time image recognition, video calls, and much more. The main SoC will be dedicated to these operations, while QCC5100 will be used mainly for the always-on display functions, for the audio management, for the keyword detection to launch the virtual assistant, and for the management of notifications via Bluetooth. 5.3. The AON platform will also be useful for managing fitness data.

The new platform will occupy a smaller surface area than the previous ones, leaving room for manufacturers to create more daring designs: the SoC will specifically occupy an area of 90mm², while the chip will occupy about 200mm², with a main PCB of about 300mm² (in the last generation the PCB occupied about 500mm²). It will be rolled out to consumer smartwatches powered by WearOS and Google’s Android, while for other more specific segments Qualcomm has prepared the W5 Gen 1 variant, which only includes the SW5100 SoC and all its improvements over its predecessor. This version is designed for the Chinese market, for the kids and senior sectors, for specific wearables for the health sector and for corporate wearable devices.

First reference designs announced

Several manufacturers have responded to Qualcomm’s call with the new platform: OPPO anticipated the presence of the new chip on OPPO Watch 3which will arrive in August, and also Mobvoi anticipated that it will implement the new platform on its Ticwatches.
