On the occasion of the launch of the new range of video cards GeForce RTX 4000NVIDIA showed Portal with RTX and especially, RTX Remix. The game, in fact, highlights the capabilities of the new free platform made available to modders with which to make remasters with a remarkable visual impact, as in the case of Portal.

The new iteration of the title, in fact, does not only show the potential of the new top of the range GeForce RTX 4090, but also and above all what the new RTX Remix platform can do. Compared to the original version, in fact, Portal acquires a completely new graphic component complete with ray tracing.

Thanks to the properties of RTX Remix, the developers have realized new textures and polygonal models which made it possible to reflect the light better. The light, in fact, is made to bounce according to the geometry and materials that make up the objects. Everything is updated in real time thanks to the use of Vulkan API in place of the original ones.

Not the first time that NVIDIA has offered updated versions of older titles to highlight the ray tracing capabilities of their video cards. However, in this case, RTX Remix adds new features that will be implementable on all titles based on DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 APIs.

NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI) allows you to add additional light sources, large and small, capable of projecting lights and shadows individually. NVIDIA Reservoir Spatio Temporal Importance Resampling Global Illumination (ReSTIR GI) allows you to illuminate dark corners not affected by direct light creating much more realistic effects and soft shadows.

RTX Remix, however, represents a set of features that allow you to perform a complete graphic remastering of the title and not just of the lighting. Through RTX Remix Runtimethe software allows you to capture the entire scene and separate it into individual elements to work on. Geometries, textures, lighting and cameras are separated into individual assets that can be imported on the main rendering software compatible with NVIDIA Omniverse such as Adobe Substance 3D Painter, Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, SideFX Houdini and Unreal Engine.

This allows you to speed up the remastering process by reworking each element individually. In addition, it is also possible to exploit artificial intelligence for a quick scene upgrade. Through AI Super Resolution It is possible to update the textures extracted in 1080p up to four times, turning them into 4K assets. At the same time, AI Physically Based Materials allows you to add physically-based rendering (PBR) properties to all resources.

All this is only a part of the capabilities that the new NVIDIA suite can offer. RTX Remix will soon be released free of charge for all modders who decide to immerse themselves in the remastering of thousands of titles.
