New Delhi:
Russian troops continued to advance in Ukraine, a day after President Vladimir Putin launched a war on the nation. Several western countries have announced sanctions against Russia and also warned of consequences for the onslaught in Ukraine.

Ukraine’s army said Friday it was fighting invading Russian forces northwest of the capital Kyiv, as Moscow pressed on with its advance on the pro-Western country for a second day. “Airborne assault troops of the Ukrainian armed forces are fighting in the areas of the settlements of Dymer and Invankiv,” Kyiv’s army said on its Facebook page.

  2. Ukrainian forces downed an enemy aircraft over Kyiv in the early hours of Friday, which then crashed into a residential building and set it on fire. Ukraine’s army said that Russia fired on civilian areas of Kyiv but that Ukraine’s air defence systems repelled “two deadly gifts”.

  3. Russian missiles and shelling rained down on Ukrainian cities on Thursday after President Vladimir Putin unleashed a full-scale ground invasion and air assault.

  4. Russia’s paratroopers took control of the Gostomel airfield, on the northwestern outskirts of Kyiv, after swooping in with helicopters and jets from the direction of Belarus.

  5. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky pleaded with the international community to do more, saying sanctions announced so far were not enough.
