As written above, in general it is a prestigious role for any human being (and full of responsibility, rather than being a “simple” astronaut) but not only. We recall that despite not having been commander in recent months (within the Minerva Mission), theItalian astronaut in any case she held a role of responsibility being at the head of the orbital segment of the United States (USOS) and this gave her the supervision of a substantial part of the International Space Station (which includes the US, European, Japanese and Canadian modules from NASA, ESA, JAXA and CSA respectively).
The role of the commander of the Space Station is to ensure the performance and well-being of the crew, effective communication with Earth control centers and manage emergency situations. In particular Samantha Cristoforetti (being at the end of his time in orbit for this mission) he will play the role of handing over to the next crew, Crew-5, who will arrive early next month.
As reported by ESA, Samantha Cristoforetti will then follow “the footsteps” by Frank De Winne, Alexander Gerst, Luca Parmitano and Thomas Pesquet (former European commanders). Although he has not yet shared the joy for the moment on his official Twitter account, some of his words are reported “I am honored to be appointed to the position of commander and look forward to drawing on the experience I have gained in Space and on Earth to lead a very capable team into orbit.”.

Samantha Cristoforetti will take over the role of commander of the International Space Station after the traditional ceremony with the handover and the key to the ISS. The performance is scheduled for September 28, 2022 and will be broadcast live. It must also be considered that in order to secure the role of commander, the Russian side (Roscosmos) also had to give its consent, which would seem to demonstrate how issues relating to staying in orbit are handled differently than those on Earth.
