After this summer’s announcement, Samsung finally brings i990 PROa new family of units M.2 with interfacePCI Express 4.0 x4. Available at the price of 189.99 for the 1TB model and 349.99 for the 2TB model (a 4TB version will arrive in 2023), the new SSDs come with sequential read and write speeds respectively up to 7450 MB / s and 6900 MB / swhile the random values reach up to 1.4 million and 1.55 million IOPS.

Intended for gamers but also professionals working with 3D rendering, 4K video editing and data analysis, these units take advantage of a new proprietary controller called Pascaland the recent V-NAND of the South Korean company (176 layer TLC) to leave behind the previous top of the range, the 980 PRO. The latter, for comparison, stops at a sequential read speed of 7000 MB / s, while it touches 5000 MB / s in sequential writing. Furthermore, the random values do not go beyond 1 million IOPS.

Arrived in the editorial office a 1TB 990 PRO SSDwhich we compared to a 2TB 980 PRO model on one platformASUS ROG Crosshair VIII Extreme with a Ryzen 5 7600X on board. Not therefore the model that offers the maximum possible parallelization, so it could behave slightly worse than the maximum values indicated, even if a lot depends on the single test.

The standard test of CrystalDiskMark sees the 990 PRO stop at approx7.1 GB / s read sequentialand about 6.6 GB /s in sequential script. The 2 TB 980 PRO, on the other hand, achieves 6.8 GB / s in reading and nearly 5 MB in writing. The step forward is there, and also confirmed by the tests we carried out AJA System Test e ACT.

In the latter, in particular, we see the 980 PRO touch a maximum of 6.44 GB / s in sequential reading, while the write value stops at 4.69 GB / s. The 990 PRO, on the other hand, comes in at 6.97 GB / s read and 6.44 GB / s write.

The 990 PRO will be available with a more structured heatsink, not only to provide an additional level of thermal control, but also a touch of style thanks to the integration of RGB LEDs.

And while many were hoping that this 990 PRO was already equipped with a PCI Express 5.0 interface, it seems Samsung is in no particular hurry to churn out an M.2 drive based on the faster interface, probably aware that it will take some time before the market. of PCIe 5.0 drives find a large audience.

Seen from this perspective, the arrival of the 990 PRO is all there, because it brings Samsung back to a level of performance that until now it had left to WD’s competition with the Black SN850X or to solutions from other companies. As often happens, the price comparison does not immediately reward the new units, with the 1TB SN850X which can be found for 20-30 euros less on Amazon, but with the right time and availability the hope that the 990 PRO will drop to slightly lower prices.
