Samsung Galaxy A23 5G review
Samsung recently (quietly) updated even the cheapest family of smartphones. Today we try Samsung Galaxy A23 5G.
Packaging

The slim package of this Galaxy A23 5G contains only the USB-C / USB-C cable inside. The power supply is no longer an included accessory, bringing this new habit even in the range of the cheapest smartphones.
Construction and Ergonomics

Samsung Galaxy A23 5G is a fairly standard Samsung smartphone for its design. The shell is in opaque plastic, which in the black color retains some fingerprints. In the hand, the device is not particularly light (given its 197 grams), but given the generous dimensions this weight is widely distributed on its surface and therefore this is used all in all with discrete simplicity. There is no certification for waterproofing, but given the price range.

The hardware of this Galaxy A23 5G is that of an inexpensive smartphone. We have one Snapdragon 695 octa core 2.2 GHz, with Adreno 619 GPU and 4 GB of RAM. Fortunately, the internal memory is 128 GB and is also expandable using a microSD.
We have 5G connectivity (obviously absent in the normal Galaxy A23 model), Wi-Fi B.C, Bluetooth 5.1 and NFC chip. The fingerprint reader is positioned on the side at the same time as the power key and is precise and fast enough. Excellent is the fact that the removable trolley allows you to put two nanoSIMs without giving up the microSD. There is also the 3.5mm headphone audio jack.
Two notable absences: there is no brightness sensor and there is no proximity sensor. The first is replaced by the software that uses the front camera: the results are decent, even if the speed of adaptation to light is lower. The proximity sensor is replaced by an ultrasonic sensor, which we must say has behaved much better than its counterparts in the Xiaomi world, although not perfect.
Camera

Samsung does not give up on wanting to fill its smartphone with as many cameras as possible.
In fact, we have four rear sensors, in addition to the selfie room The main camera is fine 50 megapixels ƒ / 1.8 and is optically stabilized, an absolute rarity in this price range. The other cameras, however, immediately begin to leave a bad taste in the mouth, already from the data sheet. The wide angle is only 5 megapixels (ƒ / 2.2) and the other two sensors (bokeh and macro) are even only 2 megapixels (ƒ / 2.4).
The main camera allows you to take discreet shots, but not always perfect, especially in the management of strong lights (especially the white sky in these cloudy days when we shot). However, the balance of the white point and the sharpness of the images are good. As imaginable, wide-angle photos are much less interesting. Even in good light, the low resolution does not allow you to bring out photos up to expectations. Although they obviously lose sharpness, the photos from the main camera remain discreet even with less light and the night mode also allows you to let a little more light “out”.
The front camera from 8 megapixel ƒ / 2.2 that’s enough, but she also suffers from the resolution not quite up to par. Videos can only be recorded in Full HD to 30fps. They are sufficient, but not very stable, thus obviously affecting the final result.

Display

Samsung Galaxy A23 5G features a 6.6-inch in PLS LCD technology with a resolution of 1080 x 2408 pixels. The screen is therefore very large and is also very bright, despite the fact that it is not in AMOLED technology, which would have been expected given the history of Samsung. While it loses some brightness when looking at the screen at a more angled angle, it still looks quite visible in many lighting conditions. In addition, it has a refresh rate increased to 120 Hz and is protected by Gorilla Glass 5. Too bad for the absence of the always-on function, which would certainly have completed it.
Software
Samsung Galaxy A23 5G arrives on the market with a smaller version of the One UI 4.
The interface is practically indistinguishable from that of a top-of-the-range smartphone, but then digging through the settings you obviously realize that the company still had to make some compromises, such as the absence of the always-on display. quoted. The software (based on Android 12 with the patches of October 2022) is not particularly fast, certainly paying for smartphone hardware entry level.
Among the features that we do not find on other smartphones we have the game launcher and an option to force multiscreen support for all apps (for example also for Instagram). Then we have once again the one-handed use mode and the double account.
Autonomy
The 5,000 mAh battery guarantees exceptional autonomy, also thanks to the aforementioned non-prominent hardware, which has the advantage of having fairly low consumption. It is easy with average use to be able to get up to two days on a single charge.
There recharging is then rapid at 25Weven if the power supply is not included in the package.
Price
Samsung has launched this Galaxy A23 5G at 349 €, a bit high price for such a device. The market quickly brought it back into the price range it belongs to and today it is on Amazon about € 230. Check the box below for (automatic) price updates.

Final judgement
Samsung Galaxy A23 5G
Samsung Galaxy A23 5G is a decent budget smartphone from Samsung, with a good display, excellent battery life and clear and easy-to-use software. Of all five cameras, however, only one is really interesting and the video part is neglected. Don’t expect a lightning-fast smartphone, but at the right price it can make sense.
