Samsung’s patent is brilliant: the display with the zone refresh rate

Let’s go back to Samsung, one of the main players in the tech market in general and the world leader in the sector smartphone. In the last few hours, important details have emerged that could shape its next top of the range that will arrive on the market.

The novelties in question come from a couple of patents deposited by Samsung and published online in the last few hours. These patents have smartphones as protagonists, and in particular the appearance of the display and management of the refresh rate.

In recent years we have seen virtually all smartphone manufacturers opt for solutions that provide displays with a higher refresh rate than canonical 60 Hz that we found on all smartphone displays until a few years ago. This has led to several models, especially top of the range, with a 90 And 120 Hz.

Among these models we also find those of Samsung, such as the most recent Galaxy S22. Samsung’s patents, however, testify that the manufacturer is looking further ahead with respect to the solutions currently available. Samsung’s ideas consist of displays that involve one variable refresh rate according to the area.

The images you find in the gallery, deriving from the patents filed by Samsung, perfectly summarize the concept and show the displays divided into zones, each of which provides a different refresh rate. In the example attached to the patent we see that some areas have a refresh rate from 30 Hzwhile for others this parameter reaches 120 Hz.

Samsung’s solution is conceptually similar to the management of variable refresh rate over time currently available in several models currently on the market. This allows you to optimize the consumption of a refresh rate that is too high in conditions of use in which it is not required.

Samsung’s solution would therefore make it possible to optimize further consumption and resource management. It also makes a lot of sense because we can certainly recognize that certain areas of the display, such as the one in which the status bar Android, never need a high refresh rate. Not even when using your smartphone for gaming sessions, which are notoriously required maximum refresh rates.
