The Japanese producer and Creo (a reality dedicated to the creation of events for photography, cinema and contemporary art) have announced the creation of a new annual competition dedicated to short films called Sony Future Filmmaker Awards. It is a new way to discover talent in the world of content creators at an international level by highlighting new ways of doing “storytelling”.

This new operation that binds even more Sony to the community of content creator and which, together with the already well-established Sony World Photography Awards, represents an indirect way of affirming the ability of brand to support those who with their equipment (and not only) create high-level works so as to become more and more important at a global level.
The news of the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards
As reported on the official website all the useful information is given for those wishing to try this new competition. In general, it will be a free competition that will select thirty finalists (globally) who will be able to participate in a trip to Los Angeles where the awards ceremony the February 22, 2023 (at the Cary Grant Theater in the Sony Pictures studios).
THE Sony Future Filmmaker Awards they will have six general categories in which aspiring directors will be able to participate. In particular, the competition is spread over three main categories with Filmmaker (which in turn is divided into Fiction, Non-Fiction and Environment), Student Filmmaker (divided into Fiction and Non-Fiction) and finally Future Format. Whoever wins will take home a cash prize and Sony professional equipment so they can continue their creative growth path.

In the Filmmaker category it is necessary to present works of 5 to 20 minutes in length shot with any type of equipment. There will be 15 finalists overall (ie a maximum of five per category). In the case of the Student Filmmaker category, students of a cinema course at a recognized institution of professional or university level in any part of the world will be able to participate. The works must have a duration between 5 and 20 minutes (shot with any equipment) and the 10 finalists (maximum five per category) must be chosen from all continents in order to guarantee the maximum representation of all cultures. For the Future Format, on the other hand, only smartphones and not different equipment can be used. The short films will last between 2 and 5 minutes and there will be five finalist candidates. The deadline for applications for all categories will be 13 December 2022 at 14:00 (Italian time).
The prizes for the winners of the contest
There will be three winners in the Filmmaker category 5000 dollars in cash, a Sony FX9 (with optics) and the opportunity to participate in a two-day workshop. For the Student Filmmaker category, on the other hand, the two winners and their respective schools will receive Sony equipment and they too will be able to participate in two-day workshops. Finally, for the winner of the Future Format category there will be a cash prize of 2500 dollarsequipment from the Japanese producer dedicated to filmmakers and the opportunity to participate in the two-day workshop.
The workshop will range from topics such as the presentation of one’s projects but also legal technical content as well as managing collaboration with agencies in the entertainment world up to the use of technologies (including CGI and animation).

The president of the jury will be Justin Chadwick who stated “We are in a phase of tremendous change in the film industry, a phase in which production houses are looking for new original voices that can stand out and find new ways to communicate with the public. With the Sony Future Filmmaker Awards we are looking for the next generation of storytellers. whose work is able to involve, inform, entertain and excite the spectators.
