At the “Stream On” event on March 8 Spotify showed off a major overhaul of the mobile app about to roll out to iOS and Android. Among the most relevant innovations we have the Video and audio previews for music, podcasts, and audiobooks in the Home feed and new video feeds for discovery on the search page.
Spotify specifically follows a trend that we have already seen in all sorts of social platforms, with a design that is somewhat reminiscent of services such as TikTok. The new UI is defined “dynamic” by the company, and useful for “a deeper discovery of new songs and a more meaningful connection between artists and fans”. Spotify also called it “the greatest evolution ever” for the mobile client for listening to music streaming.

A “more active” experience than in the past, which will guarantee the “next generation of listeners” of “get a first taste of the content before fully immersing” in it. The new mobile experience of the Home and Search feeds was described as follows by the company:
- Previews of music, podcasts, programs and audiobooks on the Home: through the Home, the user can access dedicated feeds of music, podcasts and programs or audiobooks. Here you will find audiovisual previews of the contents, through which you can save or share them, or further explore the pages of the artist or the podcast. It will obviously be possible to play the content from the beginning or continue listening to it from the point where the preview ended.
- New feeds in Search: new feeds can be explored by the user with an up or down gesture. The contents will be chosen on the basis of the user’s favorite genres, and proposed with short clips. The user will be able to save the song in a playlist, follow the artist or share it with friends, or even explore related genres using hashtags to discover new content.
In short, the new design will offer quick shortcuts to perform different types of operations, including – as already mentioned – delve into the subject, reproduce the content or even save it, download it or share it. All within a user interface that follows the trends of the moment, with which users should immediately find themselves at ease, and which here will have the purpose of make it easier to discover new songs or programs that are similar to your tastes.
Spotify said it is “beginning rolling out to Premium and Free users worldwide on iOS and Android clients” of the new UI, and that it will roll out in the “coming weeks and months.”
