Airbus UpNext the business unit of the aviation giant Airbus that is dedicated to innovative projects, especially those related to decarbonisation of air transport. This is one of several company initiatives related to the redefinition of the air transport of the future, like the project ZEROe, with which Airbus wants to identify new forms of zero-emission propulsion for its aircraft. We talked in recent days about the project for the joint announcement Airbus and ArianeGroup (a joint venture between Airbus itself and Safran specializing in space propulsion technologies) that they will work together to build the first liquid hydrogen refueling plant for aircraft at Toulouse Blagnac airport.

CERN superconducting tunnels

Today the collaboration announced instead that between Airbus Upnext and CERN to evaluate how the superconductivity can contribute to the decarbonisation of future aircraft. The project aims to lead to the creation of a demonstrator named Super-Conductor for Aviation with Low Emissions (SCALE) designed to promote the adoption of superconducting technologies in the electrical distribution systems of aircraft in flight.

The first step the development of ASCEND (Advanced superconducting and Cryogenic Experimental powertrain Demonstrator), already underway, with the subsequent feasibility study relating to the integration of the system inside an aircraft. The initiative aims to develop and test under laboratory conditions by 2025 a approximately 500 kW electric motor powered by current flowing in a superconducting system cryogenic, composed of cable and cryostat, with liquid helium cooling system.
