In June, confirmation arrived that BYD would be supplying its LFP batteries to Tesla.
Tesla is a very successful company. BYD respects and admires Tesla. We are good friends of Elon Musk and will be supplying him with batteries soon. We are friends.
The details of the agreement, however, had not been disclosed. It was only thought that the batteries would be supplied to the Shangahai Gigafactory which is becoming increasingly important to the growth plans of Elon Musk’s company. Instead, it seems that this is not the case.
According to some reports, in fact, it appears that BYD will supply its batteries to Germany’s new Gigafactory. The first batch of cars equipped with these accumulators could roll off the assembly lines between the end of August and the beginning of September. The report adds that the Chinese factory will not currently use these batteries.
Today, the German plant produces only Model Y. Apparently, electric SUVs produced in Europe may soon also have batteries supplied by BYD. It is possible, at this point, that Tesla wants to start building the “entry level” model with a single engine that is now produced in China.
Tesla is working for improve the production capacity of the German Gigafactory. By the first quarter of 2023 it should reach 5,000 vehicles produced per week, a figure still far from the target of 10,000 units.
