Tesla is gradually opening its Supercharger network to electric cars from other manufacturers. After Europe, soon it will be America’s turn too. Surprisingly, the manufacturer has decided to open its proprietary charging protocol with the precise aim of trying to impose its connector in the American market.

As we know, when Tesla started making electric cars, there was no dominant charging standard. So, the American brand he developed his own. Obviously, many things have changed since then and, today, the dominant charging standard in Europe and the United States is CCS. On the American market, however, Teslas are still offered with their own connector which is compatible with American Superchargers. In Europe, on the other hand, cars are now offered with the CCS connector and the Supercharger stations have gradually been adapted to the new charging standard.

VERY HIGH POWER RECHARGE

Tesla claims that after more than a decade of use and the equivalent of 20 billion miles (32 billion km) of charging, their proprietary connector is “the most proven in North America“.

Elon Musk’s company has therefore decided to open its standard by calling it North American Charging Standards (NACS), so that any other company can adopt it.

We urge charging network operators and vehicle manufacturers to place the Tesla charging connector and charging port, now called the North American Charging Standard (NACS), on their charging stations and vehicles.


Tesla notes that the connector has no moving parts, it is half the size and twice as powerful as CCS connectors. Besides, it also supports AC charging. The interesting aspect of the Tesla connector is that it seems to be able to operate at much higher powers than previously thought.

In fact, it can work both at 500 V and at 1,000 V. Furthermore, Tesla added that it is capable of operating at over 900 A. This means that, potentially, it would be possible to charge up to power of 900 kW, more than 3 times the current claimed capacity of Tesla’s latest Supercharger stations. Until now, such high powers were only talked about for the connectors dedicated to the Tesla Semi electric truck. Instead, it seems that Elon Musk’s company originally designed its connector for cars with the future in mind.


Tesla’s move is very interesting precisely in view of the opening of Supercharger stations in America. Given the capillarity of its charging network and given the specifics of its standard which already today potentially guarantees very high charging powers on paper, operators and car manufacturers could be tempted to follow Tesla on this technical path.
