It is no secret that what appears on the small and large screen or on a stage, is only the final elaboration of the big work which takes place on a film set and during rehearsals. There are the actors, the showrunners and screenwriters, obviously there is the director but there are also the so-called workers. People who deal with make-up and wigs, set design and technical tasks concerning sounds, lights, special effects, locations and all those imperceptible details that end up making an artistic production truly unique.
Next to most widespread and now famous professionsHowever, there are many others that are less known and equally fundamental for the success of a film, a series or a live show. These are apparently “strange” professions and figures that in reality are necessary only in some specific work contexts. We have found some, to understand what it is.
The co-ordinator of intimacy, one of the #MeToo legacies
One of the cinematographic professions that is becoming increasingly popular especially on Hollywood sets (but it has also landed in Italy) is that ofintimacy coordinator or co-ordinator of intimacy. It is a figure who deals with managing the nude scenes and “choreographing” those of sex in front of the camera. The goal is to make the sequences realistic and not vulgar, but above all to put the actors and actresses who have to shoot them at ease. It seems that the first appearance on a set of the intimacy coordinator dates back to 2018, during the filming of The Deucethe TV series with James Franco and Emily Meade.
It is also necessary to reflect on historical and social context which led to the appearance of this kind of professional: in 2018 the jet-set of the film industry was fully experiencing the #MeToo and the sex scandals linked to the figure of Harvey Weinstein. James Franco himself had been accused by some acting students, because – according to the acting apprentices – during his lessons he had forced them to perform in scenes that required nudity. The Deucemoreover, it tells of the legalization of the pornographic industry between the 70s and 80s and the nude scenes and, more generally, those of explicit sex, are many. It was Emily Meade, therefore, who urged the production company (HBO) so that during the shooting there was a person capable of protecting her and managing the embarrassments and any unpleasant situations that could occur after the take.
Even today there are many actresses who emphasize the importance of the intimacy coordinator and who demand his presence on the set: from Jennifer Lawrence to Amanda Seyfried who recently admitted to having been pressured to shoot nude scenes in the past. The profession of intimacy coordinator is currently quite widespread, so much so that there is a real one professional association, chaired by the Italian-American Amanda Blumenthal. She is the one who worked, for example, on the nude and sex scenes of the series Euphoria for which Zendaya was awarded the Emmy for Best Actress in a Leading Role. Among the most famous intimacy coordinators there are also Miriam Lucia who recently supported the sets of House of Dragons And The White Lotus and Ita O ‘Brian, in charge of the shot in Sex Education, Normal People and founder of Intimacy on set, the agency that released general guidelines to follow when shooting hot scenes.

These professionals are part of the structure of the work rather than the scene.
