Italy wants to focus on development of rail transport experimenting with advanced transport solutions. The Italian government thus intends to speed up mobility systems, reduce travel times and reduce the environmental impact of transport.

For this, a memorandum of understanding was signed between the Ministry of Sustainable Infrastructure and Mobility, the Puglia Region, the Italian Railway Network (RFI), the Italian State Railways and the Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea-Port of Taranto. to experience, among other things, magnetic levitation systems in rail transport both by overlapping the existing infrastructures, and by creating new infrastructures that would allow the transport of goods and people at very high speed.

On the signing of this memorandum of understanding, the Minister of Sustainable Infrastructures and Mobility, Enrico Giovannini he has declared:

The Protocol signed today, which allows for the first time the experimentation in the railway sector of latest generation technologies, such as magnetic levitation trains, demonstrates that, alongside the unprecedented investments in the development of sustainable mobility systems financed thanks to the National Recovery and Resilience (Pnrr) and at national funds, Italy looks to the future and places itself at the forefront of technological development applied to sustainable mobility, guaranteeing maximum safety.

Going into more detail than what has been told, the project envisages, first of all, the realization of advanced feasibility studies for the use of magnetic levitation technologies in railway transport, the development of technical-economic feasibility projects of the first phase and the making of prototypes.

A total of 4 million euros will be allocated, of which 1.8 million from the Puglia Region, a further 1.8 million from RFI and 400,000 euros from the Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea-Port of Taranto, to cover the costs of the various phases up to the creation of prototypes and experimentation in the field.

The Port System Authority of the Ionian Sea will also provide suitable spaces for the construction of the infrastructure and will ensure the absence of operational interference in the execution of the tests. In Pugliatherefore, new advanced forms of railway mobility will be tested. It will therefore be very interesting to discover the results of this project.
