Recently, Nova Launcher, perhaps the most popular third-party launcher available, was acquired by Branch, a company known to developers for providing tools for managing and measuring deep links in applications. Now, a few days after this official status, the first update for Nova Launcher of the “Branch” era and the presence of the new owners was immediately noticed.

In particular, the developers focused in implementing Branch’s search technology in the Nova Launcher search engine. In fact, in this update, as highlighted in the changelog, it is stated that the company’s search system has been introduced which uses an offline library identified as “io.branch.search”. Furthermore, it is clarified that this library does not access the Internet.

And speaking of new options, as promised by the creator of Nova Launcher, Kevin Barry, Branch-related functions can be either accepted or rejected by users. For example, the Branch Search option is disabled by default when you install the latest beta. Other news contained in the update concern the resolution of the problem about the resizing of widgets and the combination of all contact options – such as phone, WhatsApp and SMS – for each contact (Nova Launcher, on the other hand, showed separate results for WhatsApp). Obviously, then, there is no shortage of small bug fixes.

Finally, the Branch CEO, Alex Austin, reassured users about a possible collection of personal data: Hey guys, this is Alex, Branch CEO … We’re not collecting data from Nova. We will not try to monetize Nova in any other way. It is all about knowledge. I know it’s more fun to tell scary stories about “tracking” but you got it all wrong. Wait and see.”
