Instagram is working on a new feature that has always been known in the social field, but which in effect was missing here. You want to give registered users the ability to republish the posts or reels of others. The novelty was noticed by the social media analyst, Matt Navarra, who posted a screenshot on Twitter in which it shows a profile card with highlighted repost symbol. After being contacted about the matter by TechCrunch, Instagram subsequently confirmed that it is currently testing the feature.
We are exploring the possibility of re-sharing posts in the feed, so that people can share what resonates with them and so the original creators are credited for their work.[…] We plan to test it with a small number of people soon.
Currently, the most common way people can repost or share posts is by adding them to a story, but this one has a fixed deadline of 24 hours from publication. This new feature will allow you to select a reel or post and repost it in the main feedmuch like you can do on both Twitter and TikTok.
It seems that Instagram has been working on the repost for at least a few months, as the app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi had identified the function under development as early as last May. According to the screenshots shared by Paluzzi (visible in the link in VIA), Instagram has evaluated the possibility of adding the repost option in the sharing menu. The screenshots also suggest that users will have the option to add their own thoughts when re-sharing a post.
