Making a photo sensor “on their own” it is a very complex challenge and not without difficulty. There are few companies in the world that produce them but Sigma however he tried this way with the production of his own Foveon X3 (after acquiring Foveon in 2008). As we have written in the past, the first version was discarded several months ago and we have therefore focused on a new version.

Obviously this has led to delays and additional costs for a reality that certainly does not have the potential of Sony (in terms of sensor production). However, not everything has been lost and so, after the announcement at the beginning of the year, Sigma confirmed through its CEO that the photo sensor it could arrive by 2022. The diversification of components and the possibility of using one’s own sensor on one’s own camera could be a decisive advantage for the Japanese company so as to stand out on an increasingly crisis market.

The Sigma Foveon X3 photo sensor could arrive in 2022

During a video interview with CEO Kazuto Yamaki, among the other topics discussed could not miss that of Sigma Foveon X3 photo sensor. The senior executive said “We are still working on it and now we are working on the prototype of the three-layer X3 sensor. This sensor should be available this year.”. The words suggest that the company is in the midst of what it was called “phase 3” which included the “Final evaluation of the prototype using a full frame image sensor with the same specifications as mass production, including the AD converter etc …”.

Yamaki added that this sensor isn’t particularly versatile. The performance in low light conditions will not be at the top of the category but, when there is good ambient brightness “the camera will be able to create beautiful and impressive photographs”. The CEO knows that there are some camera enthusiasts who adopt this kind of sensor and admits that he too uses a camera with Foveon sensor for 20 years (approximately) also for his family photographs.

No other statements are made on the matter, but it is possible that in the coming months, before the official presentation, Sigma will still speak extensively of Foveon X3. Recall that the structure of this photo sensor it is different from others on the market.

In particular, instead of using a Bayer matrix with the red, green and blue pixels on a single plane (and under the photosensitive silicon element) and then moving on to the demosaicing process and reconstructing the color image, with the Foveon X3 the acquisition will take place on three different levels. The three silicon layers exploit the different penetration capacities of electromagnetic waves and each pixel can read all the color components without having the problems of the demosaic process (which can vary according to the algorithms and management of the individual cameras).
