ASRock created X670 Xpansion Kitone expansion card dedicated to the new B650 LiveMixer motherboard – but it may work with other ASRock models, we don’t know – that allows B650 motherboards to become X670 motherboards.

Expansion card see on board a second chipset which guarantees not only the addition of two M.2 slots for NVMe PCIe 4.0 SSDsbut also two SATA ports, a USB-C port at 10Gbps, three USB A ports and a 10 Gbit Ethernet interface.

It is not yet clear if this card will ever arrive on the market, even if it seems an almost definitive product and not a prototype: for the moment ASRock seems to want to take the pulse of enthusiasts on a solution of this type. Among other things, at the moment, a custom BIOS has been installed on the B650 LiveMixer to allow interfacing with the expansion card.

The card requires not only a PCIe x4 slot with all lines connected to the chipset on the motherboard, but it also features an ad hoc cable probably for low speed I/O communications like I2C and SPI.

Undoubtedly a curious solution that potentially offers an option to those who have invested in a solution B650 motherboard but, at some point, need a few more features.

As noted, X670 motherboards feature two Promontory 21 chipsets, while the B650 series has only one. Therefore, by adding the chipset on the expansion card to the chipset on the motherboard, the whole package should provide characteristics similar to a native X670.
