The last 600 members of Uttarakhand’s Van Rawats, one of India’s smallest and most endangered tribes, face a tough challenge to make themselves heard this election. Virtually cut off from society, most have no voter cards, Aadhaar cards or even cell phones, and are in abject poverty.
To exercise their franchise, a Van Rawat first has to undertake a journey of roughly 60 km to get a voter ID card made. On polling day on Monday, tribe members who mainly live in areas in and around forests in the hills would have to trek several km to reach polling booths and then back through forests and tough hill terrain.
