At the conference Explore 2022, VMware presented several novelties in its range of products ranging from new generation of vSphere until Aira new family of services designed to facilitate the management of multicloud environments.
VMware vSphere 8 and vSAN 8: support for DPUs arrives

The main novelty present in VMware vSphere 8 it is the support for DPUs, the “intelligent” network cards capable of processing data directly to relieve the CPU of less profitable tasks. VMware says this relief leads to an improvement that goes as far as 20% in CPU usage efficiency, due to the fact that tasks such as network packet management are processed directly on the card.
VMware sees in DPUs the ability to create data center where there is no longer an external perimeter, but in which the local network is also constantly monitored and controlled to look for signs of compromise. In fact, thanks to DPUs it would be possible to create truly hyperconverged nodes in which the firewall is also implemented and managed locally on the single machine, thus drastically increasing the overall level of security.
The use of DPUs is made possible by what VMware called “Project Monterey”that is, running vSphere directly on such devices (which are, in fact, full computers with CPU, RAM and storage).
As for vSAN 8, VMware talked about the new one vSAN Express Storage Architecture which promises to increase efficiency and performance. To understand the caliber of the company’s claims, during the presentation of the news it was said that the new architecture allows for the reliability of RAID 1 while using the space of RAID 5.
The company did not announce, and did not answer our question in the news announcement session dedicated to reporters, regarding changes in the licensing model, so it can be expected that the current model with perpetual licenses will continue and that the subscription model remains exclusive to vSphere + and vSAN +.
The first servers were announced in a separate session conducted by Dell and NVIDIA Dell PowerEdge equipped with NVIDIA-branded BlueField DPUs and with vSphere 8 support. It should be noted that while NVIDIA also supports Linux and other operating systems, the company has confirmed that the user experience is currently inferior to that offered by vSphere is that full functionality is only available through that platform by commercial choice of NVIDIA.
VMware Aria: a new name for multi-cloud services

VMware Aria is the new name given by the company to its solutions for the multi-cloud: more specifically, the VMware vRealize, CloudHealth by VMware Suite and Tanzu Observability by Wavefront solutions now fall under the hat of Aria. The heart of this family of services is Aria Grapha graph-based data storage system that allows you to update information in near real time and keep track of what is happening in complex multi-cloud environments while integrating with third-party solutions (for example, tools forobservability and Application Performance Management).
Part of the VMware Aria family are: Aria Hubwhich allows you to view the data and use them to control the infrastructure and related services; Aria Automation Guardrailswhich allows you to specify (and enforce) limits regarding costs, security, performance, networks and configuration of multi-cloud environments; Aria Migrationwhich facilitates and accelerates migration to and between cloud services; Aria Business Insightswhich uses artificial intelligence to separate useful information from background noise.
